Usually I build a full release and a custon kernel tailored for the
target machine. Then I boot with the new kernel to single user. If the
kernel works I move the old /etc to /ETC and extract the distribution
.tgz files (still in single user). Finaly I merge the changes from /ETC
to /etc by hand and leave single user mode.
