Could I ask you gnome users to try to reproduce this problem for me:

In the 'Actions' menu click 'Run application..' and type in 'xterm'.

I see the xterm come up just fine, but when I try to close the xterm
it hangs forever and chews up lots of CPU cycles instead of closing.

I only run -current, so I can't say if this is a gnome problem or a
-current problem.
