NJW: You're making the mistake of assuming that that parameter is one that
NJW: is intended to be twiddled, rather than an implementation detail with
NJW: no particular guarantees attached.

If it weren't intended to be twiddled, I don't think it would have a
"=?" attached to it.  Maybe that's just my screwy logic jumping in
and making an assumption.

It's all just a matter of digging deeper, to me.  I should just shut
up and dig rather than asking questions.
