   As I noted, I tried that.  The new kernel cause fsck to
fail with a disturbing regularity.

   I think the problem may've been deeper, tho.  I eventually
gave up on that disk drive.  Tho, strangely, the 2.0_RC4
kernel never saw these problems.  I'm not sure why that
is/was.

   I'm trying to rebuild with a new disk now, and other than
seeming dog slow, it's working alright.  I may have to make
sure the SCSI bus negotiations turned out as I expected for
the new device(s).
