Ah! Thanks for the clue-bat, Nick. Turns out, this was an issue with
the host OS (NetBSD-i386) not having libgcc_pic.a installed (it was
build/installed with MKPICINSTALL=no). Once I build and installed that
on the host, everything went swimmingly.
