Note that if -current were right now to use a "2.0.99.NN" pattern then
an eventual 2.1 release would be an upgrade from all previous
-current's, and -current would still be an upgrade from 2.0, relatively
speaking.

Translating the final ".NN" into a letter to maintain the same "2.1x"
style pattern for -current external naming should be easy enough, no?

That still gives lots of room for 2.0.NN patch releases....  :-)
