as well as Geoff's PR#23716 there is my PR#24987 which is the same thing.

As to machines that work vs those that don't:  Is it perhaps ones where root 
is mapped to root that work and where root is mapped to nobody that don't?
As the problem only strikes us on machines where root is mapped to nobody (I 
think).
