Hey,

I used to have the same kind of problem on NetBSD 1.6.X on my i386, 
until I changed the CPU cooler...
Then I asked a pal, and he confirmed that the motherboard could freeze 
the whole computer it the CPU was going too hot.

If it happens in a somewhat high load phase, then I suggest you monitor 
your CPU temperature...

Oh, and if you need to heat the box up a bit, I suggest compiling a 
netbsd-current distro with all the sets ;)
