stands for atm. when you use your machine as client
you use pppoe between your machine and the modem, then
the modem uses pppoa, going through the dslam then
bas until it gets in the ip domain of your isp. when
you use a modem-router, it does the connection and handles
it (as pppoa) and then acts as a router for local
machines, like your pc or whatever.
