As far as I know, there's nothing in XFree86 that gets installed
outside /usr/X11R6 (correct me if I'm wrong), so you could just
move that aside while trying out a new X release.
# cd /usr
# mv X11R6 old.X11R6
# cd /usr/xsrc && make build
