Following up to myself...

The disk in the mac was indeed a 40GB samsung SP04011N or something
similar. I added an old seagate into that G4, and it now correctly finds
both disks, without any problems what-so-ever.

However, installing netbsd wasn't as easy as that, both disks would work
just like that (without debug flags), but 1.6.2 does not find the gem0,
and using 200403030000 snapshot will give me a strange (typed from
memory):

ftp: connect: Permission denied

when trying to ftp the sets. The network works as far as I can tell,
being set up properly (without dhcp, no such thing in the current
sysinst it seems?), names resolv, and I can ping anywhere.
(curiously, pinging the gateway produced results like pinging the
broadcast, but the gw is a linux doing some shady bridging, so I'm not
overly convinced it's netbsd's fault)
