  I think you need to do it manually.

Either that or do it from source with build.sh and installworld.  I
did this on a machine from 1.6 to current several months ago, albeit
without raid, and had no issues.  I wouldn't even think of doing a
binary upgrade if I had the space to build, unless the machine was so
slow that the build would take more than a few days.
