I've always thought that the Beastie's trident was its most useful
iconic feature, hence this:

The first attempt at a trident came from a "D" and a "!" combined
together. Unfortunately, having the dot from the exclamation point in
the vicinity of "NET" looked a bit too close to a certain Microsoft
trademark...
