Thanks to everyone who responded.

I doublechecked, and it turned out that the TTF from the font server
were causing the problem.

I have a secondary issue: My X server pukes on TTF. If I have a fonts.dir
with the following contents, I get the "Error#56" message (BadFontPath).

##
1
zyme.ttf	-freetype-Zyme-medium-i-normal--0-0-0-0-p-0-ascii-0

I have the following extensions enabled in my X server; I'm probably
missing something. Clue-by-four welcomed.

number of extensions: 25
    BIG-REQUESTS
    DOUBLE-BUFFER
    DPMS
    Extended-Visual-Information
    FontCache
    LBX
    MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
    MIT-SHM
    MIT-SUNDRY-NONSTANDARD
    RANDR
    RENDER
    SECURITY
    SHAPE
    SYNC
    TOG-CUP
    X-Resource
    XC-APPGROUP
    XC-MISC
