first I don't have a wi0 device, so I'm assuming you meant s/wi0/ath0/

second, I don't have a wireless router handy at the moment, but I just 
assigned  an ip to my interface and tried a ping.

in both cases the output is: 
0 packets received by filter
0 packets dropped by kernel

so do I need to compile in wi support?
