I have a similar problem.

I recently bought a TFT display, and I have connected both the digital
and analogue outputs of the graphics card to the display. When I start X,
the digital output is blank exactly as you describe above. However,
because I have the analogue connection, the monitor "fails over" to it,
and I can continue to interact with the system. Without the VGA input
I'm stuffed as you describe above.

Here's the curious thing: fixing it is a matter of switching back to
console from VGA, and then back to X again. This resets something
somewhere, and I can now select the DVI input on the screen and get
a nice digital input. I have no idea if this is caused by X or the
kernel. I built both about 2-3 weeks ago.
