On i386 it doesn't, there isn't enough space on the boot floppies for the
MI installboot. Since all it has to do is copy /usr/mdec/bootxx_xxfs
to start of the partition without tromping all overthe label.

Did you remember to copy /usr/mdec/biosboot to /boot ?
