Err, when I said "with my own kernel," I meant one built from -current sources,
patched re. the ethernet driver that I mentioned.  (^&

I'd be surprised if a 1.6 kernel ran everything from a -current userland at
this point, and certainly wouldn't care to try.  (^&


Anyway, Allen Briggs seems to have been right: ffs_vfsops.c was a version
or two too old.  The laptop is now running a -current kernel and (last I
checked) slowly building a distribution.
