i386 MP system running source from 6/24/2003.

1. make build and make cleandir fail with:

cleandir ===> usr.bin/vgrind
make: Unclosed variable specification for CC
[1]   Segmentation fault (core dumped) make "_THISDIR_=...
*** Error code 139

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/src/usr.bin
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/src
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/src

2. build.sh fails in various ways, but I did get it to build the binaries
   in /usr/obj. However, I couldn't get any incantation of build.sh or make
   to install the binaries in /. Looks like it is always in cross compile
   mode.

Kernel now running is built with COMPAT_16.
