Well wouldn't you know it, I think I'm going to have to retract what I
said!  

My adaptor now seems to work well enough to support a back-and-forth
packet protocol with my GPS.  The last time I tested this, which was
admittedly a while back, the adaptor just hung after a few seconds.

For the record, here is what my Dlink DSB-S25 prints out:

    uhub3 at uhub0 port 1
    uhub3: MCT Hub, class 9/1, rev 1.00/1.02, addr 3
    uhub3: 5 ports with 3 removable, bus powered
    uhub3: strange, connected port 4 has no power
    umct0 at uhub3 port 4
    umct0: MCT Corporation. USB-232 Interfact Control
    ler, rev 1.00/1.02, addr 4
    ucom0 at umct0

Anyone know what the "strange, connected port 4 has no power" means?
