OK seems my Airport base station is dialled up anyway, so I have
access to the box after all.

here is the original disklabel on the i386 machine:

# /dev/rwd1d:
type: unknown
disk: storage
label:
flags:
bytes/sector: 512
sectors/track: 63
tracks/cylinder: 16
sectors/cylinder: 1008
cylinders: 16383
total sectors: 234441648
rpm: 3600
interleave: 1
trackskew: 0
cylinderskew: 0
headswitch: 0 # microseconds
track-to-track seek: 0 # microseconds
drivedata: 0

16 partitions:
# size offset fstype [fsize bsize cpg/sgs]
 a: 234441585 63 4.2BSD 1024 8192 86 # (Cyl. 0*- 232580)
 c: 234441585 63 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 0*- 232580)
 d: 234441648 0 unused 0 0 # (Cyl. 0 - 232580)

.. and then when I have FFS_EI compiled in, I get a default disklabel
on my mac .. this is the error I get when editing the disklabel again:

/tmp//EdDk.a08810a: 24 lines, 632 characters
disklabel: ioctl DIOCWDINFO: Label magic number or checksum is wrong!
(disklabel or kernel is out of date?)
re-edit the label? [y]:

Shouldn't the x86 disklabel (once I restore it) "just work" ?

About to clean out my kernel compile and try again.

  C.
