Good point.

Here's dmesg... Note that the buffer survived reboot, so I have some old
error messages.

The reboot at the bottom happened when I noticed that:
1.  The backup I was running using an NFS disk as scratch space had stopped
writing new data.
2.  I had 960MB in use for file cache.
3.  Nothing new was happening.
4.  Attempts to allocate memory were failing, because all the memory was
tied up for file cache.

Perhaps that's relevant...
