You can query the stats with the SIOCGIFDATA ioctl or query-and-clear
them with SIOCZIFDATA. Some network watching utilities from pkgsrc
use this.

The only tool in the base distribution I know of that uses the former is
"ifconfig -v ppppoe0". I don't know if ifconfig should get an option to clear
them.
