There was some comment about speed increases on this list awhile ago.
Someone mentioned work Charles Hannum had sone.  I noticed significant 
speed increases here too! :-)

Would someone be willing to identify a few of the most significant 
changes in the source code and briefly explain why the changes 
produced such a large speed increase?
