If you need to know the permissions for hard links then you've got a
very serious conflict of purposes in how you set and/or validate the
state of file metadata.  You only need to know the permissions of the
first installed file -- all the links to it will have identical
permissions, by definition.

Well, no, but knowing what they're linked to is (at least if you wish to
do it efficiently), which is of course quite important....
