Thanks, I managed to track down a OV511 based webcam in the form of the Swann SmartCam Deluxe Model EC-300. It works with the vid package. 

Now I just need to find some tunables to improve the quality, the OV511 was a low cost solution in it's day and the modern webcams show that! :)
