Well, there are Linux drivers, afaik. But the list of supported
cams is limited (my d-link seems to be not supported) and we
still have the problem of porting the drivers.

This is definitely the best solution. Grabbing still images is
very easy, just use bktr2jpeg form pkgsrc. Don't know about
streaming. Please have a look at bktr's driver page:
