Yah, that seems to be the case -- for some reason I was getting hung up
on the `cd blah' failing, but it is indeed the second tar in the pipeline
that croaks due to no input.

And all this was made more difficult that I now have two tars on my system
and my hand-invoking of this pipeline used the old /usr/bin/tar whereas the
make used the new pax-as-/bin/tar.  Feh.
