Oh, the agony! Those people will have to use pkgsrc to recover from
their dated tapes!

Really, I don't see this as that big a deal.

Now, if existing *backup* scripts (like, say, those using rmt) were
to break as a result of the change, that'd be a problem. But I
understand Christos already took care of that.
