Perhaps it is the switch. It's plugged into a Netgear FS508, and if it's
like every other piece of Netgear crap I own, it's probably half-dead.

The system is unusable. I had it doing downloads of the redhat CDROMS and
that tends to lock up the ethernet card every half hour. ifconfig up/down
didn't do anything so I had to power cycle.
