Removing the code that looks for /etc/ld.conf.so brings the
time back to about 1.440 so 13% better that the original.

I haven't tried putting libc.so and ld.elf_so into /lib, but one less
directory level could be significant.  Especially if it avoids
crossing a mount point (/usr isn't a separate fs on this system).
