Today I got the gem MI driver to work on a 733 MHz G4 "Quicksilver"
Macintosh. I also plugged it in a GigE switch and got it to talk to an
Alpha XP1000 over 1000baseT. After a few tweaks and enhancements to
the gem driver, I got the Mac to send at 355Mb/s to the XP1000 and
receive at 280Mb/s. This is without support for hardware checksumming,
large packets, or page loans on sends.
The major bug left is a problem with autosensing. For some reason, the
gem driver doesn't autosense the currently media properly. To workaround
it, try setting the media to a specific speed, wait a second or two, and
then back to autosense. At time point you may need to toggle gem down
and up.
