I've done it twice (and since reverted), so perhaps I can help you
with the first two...

No. There don't seem to be any incompatibilities in the client libs.
The only thing is, X4 installs some things that are (were) packages
with X3, so if you choose to delete "rman", "xpm", "freetype2",
"Mesa*", and all the packages that depend on them, and rebuild them
all after, it will make the package tools happy, but otherwise you'll
just overwrite files with functionally identical ones, so it'll be OK.

The configuration changes *a* *lot*, but it's also a lot simpler. Best
to build a new config with "X -config", and tweak on that.
