As I pointed out, my firmware is ancient. It's plausible that
something needed to be changed to cooperate with the new firmware
and the real solution to my problem is to find a friend with a
Windows laptop and stick my card in their machine to do the upgrade.

(Fwiw, this card also flatly refused to work in a Linux laptop, but
it would even light the link light there, so I'm not sure if this is
the same or a separate problem.)

At any rate, I'm updating sources now on my main machine (an AMD
Thunderbird 800, significantly faster than the P133 in the laptop),
so maybe a new kernel will make things better.

Which reminds me... the kernel I've got is using:

=3D=3D> /usr/src/sys/dev/pcmcia/if_wi_pcmcia.c <=3D=3D
/* $NetBSD: if_wi_pcmcia.c,v 1.15 2001/12/04 18:46:30 christos Exp $ */
=3D=3D> /usr/src/sys/dev/ic/wi.c <=3D=3D
/*	$NetBSD: wi.c,v 1.29 2001/11/13 13:14:46 lukem Exp $	*/
=3D=3D> /usr/src/sys/dev/ic/wi_ieee.h <=3D=3D
/*	$NetBSD: wi_ieee.h,v 1.6 2001/11/11 00:34:52 christos Exp $	*/

Been considering a Linksys for the apartment's loaner laptop. How do
you like it? They're pretty cheap...
