I take it that the AS500/500 refers to an Alpha?  I've seen similar
lossage when I tried to build the pkgsrc m68k cross-toolchain (based
in egcs 1.1.1 from memory) on an Alpha a whiles ago, but never got to
tracking it down.  Back then it worked fine on an i386, so I suspect
some 64 bit bogons in gcc/config/m68k...
