=2E.. and no sooner do I send that then I shimmy back over the root
xterm and find:

/usr/obj/tools/bin/i386--netbsdelf-gcc -o cpp0 -nostdlib -Wl,-rpath-link,=
/build/usr/lib /build/usr/lib/crt0.o /build/usr/lib/crtbegin.o cccp.o cexp.=
o intl.o prefix.o version.o mbchar.o -L/build/usr/lib -lgcc -lc -lgcc /bui=
ld/usr/lib/crtend.o
/usr/obj/tools/i386--netbsdelf/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gcc/cpp0
*** Error code 1

Stop.
make: stopped in /usr/src/gnu/usr.bin/gcc

This is pretty clearly not what happened during the regular build
(as it would have broken everything... or, at least, *should* have),
but it means that my attempting to build gcc manually was less than
clever.

I'll try to take a closer look later today if I can.
