You do have MKMAN, MKINFO, MKDOC and MKLINT set to 'no' in mk.conf
in the .ifndef bsd_pkg_mk or whatsoever it's called section ?
I came with those values happily to gcc, which fails to find
-lbackend then ;)

Btw, I encountered your problem before this stage of happy error ;)
  (and solved it by setting hte above to 'no')
