Hm, I should have said that it won't compile until USE_NEW_TOOLCHAIN is 
the default.

Yes, because my copy of /usr/bin/as was compiled from binutils-2.11 sources
(modified to use ELF format for i386-*-netbsd target).  Not a clean solution,
for sure.  It is at http://195.208.217.73/~svs/netbsd/mplayer-build-tools.tgz .
(Backup your regular /usr/bin/as first.)
