Hopefully the pain caused by losing their configs will convince them the
very first time it happens...  :-)

Maybe you could encourage it by showing them how to do minor branch
upgrades (eg. 1.5 -> 1.5.1) by showing them how to simply unpack the
"base.tgz" files and such.  You could tell them initially that if they
simply unpack the same release again they're guaranteed not to break
anything.  Act surprised when they say they lost everything in
/etc/defaults/* and then show them the comments at the top of each file
in there....  :-)

Of course it might also help more if the leading "DO NOT EDIT THIS FILE
DIRECTLY; IT MAY BE REPLACED DURING A SYSTEM UPGRADE.  EDIT /etc/rc.conf
INSTEAD." were formatted with "banner" instead....  ;-)
