I have seen exactly the same behaviour on 1.5.1_BETA2 (snapshot from arch/i386) !
It went fine with about first 800MB of tar file (I was doing tar xfvp), but was *incredible*
slow later -- even mpg123 running in the background could not read mp3s well. (The disk is 7200rpm..)
It's first time I've seen that weird behaviour, though. Maybe my wd0 is broken?
