I tested on this card:

ep0 at eisa0 slot 4: 3Com 3C597 Fast Etherlink TX
ep0: interrupting at irq 12
ep0: address 00:10:4b:24:be:a8, 64KB word-wide FIFO, 3:1 Rx:Tx split
ep0: 10baseT, 10baseT-FDX, 100baseTX, 100baseTX-FDX (default 100baseTX)

on a slow 486/50 with root on ep0.

No problems, and (as Herb suspected for this slow machine) no noticeable
performance difference. But then I did not run conclusive benchmakarks...
