I'll have to reboot into an old kernel to make sure it comes up sync..  but I
have never seen a sync negotiation error before.  I've certainly not seen it
spit out errors while probing before.  And I was using -current about 1 month
before thorpej-scsipi.

Perhaps Simon is correct though.. and it does have sync-negotiation problems.. 
FWIW, my drive was empty at boot too.
