just as a datapoint, at one of my previous jobs i setup a FreeBSD box running
samba 2.0.x with an NT4 PDC using domain as my auth type. we had a mix of
Win98, WinNT4 and Win2K on the desktops (well, except for me, heh) and had
absolutely no problems with it. even had people using DAVE on MacOS to use
the fileserver as well.

it's now about a year and two jobs later, so i don't really remember how i had
it configured, but i could ask the guy who took it over to mail me the config
file if need be.

i'm going to assume i set it up with encrypted passwords since we had no Win95
on any of the machine (Internet Startup, all machines were new enough to not
have 95 on them)

just what i can remember to try and help you.
