Thanks.  The problem was that I had never ran fdisk on that disk (although
it had been used on a NetBSD machine for quite some time).  The machine is
booting happily now - but a not-so-old 9-gig IBM SCSI (narrow) disk feels
quite slow now that I have used the new x0-gig ata disks. :-O
