I didn't try gphoto, but s10sh (a command line tool) works
with some minimal hacking, using the USB connection.
Just tested with an S20.
You'll need the newest "libusb" which supports FreeBSD -
there are some incompatibilities to the NetBSD USB stack
unfortunately, wrt /dev/ugen* file naming.
When I have time I'll make a pkg of it...
