Ok, I installed NetBSD (1.5 though) on the DS10 it's hooked up to, and
it seems as if the performance problem is with the PC, since I seem to
get the same 25MB/s as in DU. I'll see if I can try this with the
other hardware next week or so.

Is there reason to suspect that two '895 based cards can be very
different in terms of performance?
