It's pretty awful.  It appears to be a fairly lame Philips drive.

Hmm.  I didn't try that.  What I did try was "cdrecord".

Hmm.  Try a newer one; I had it "work", almost.

Not that I know of.  I was able to burn a CD, but not able to fixate it;
however, when I took it to another drive and just ran "-fixate", the
resulting CD worked fine.

Even under MacOS I've never gotten that thing to mount as a drive, although
it appears to burn CD's fine over there.
