Is Your ld.so up to date enough?  In other words, does ``strings ld.so
| grep emul'' prints /emul/aout/ ?  If not, try
/usr/src/libexec/ld.aout_so/ld.so.i386.uue.

ldconfig for a.out on ELF system looks /emul/aout/etc/ld.so.conf, btw.
