I don't have any fix or solution -- just a comment. You say "high" for
1.00.

My desktop machine (AMD K6-2 400Mhz, 128MB, NetBSD 1.4.2) almost always
hovers between 2.00 and 11.00 for the past six months. It is never
sluggish -- but the load averages are crazy. The only think I can point it
to is Blackbox window manager that hangs some times. (I provided my GDB
results -- but no answers.) The only time my system load goes down is when
I restart my window manager or switch to another window manager. The weird
thing is now my load has been around 2-3.5 for the past couple days (when
usually it is 7+) -- ever since I replaced a PS/2 mouse (Microsoft) that
died with a serial mouse (MouseSystems). (My Linux desktop running similar
software and blackbox on a pentium 100 almost always has a load average
less than 1.00 -- but it is very sluggish.)

Well.. sorry to take this on a tangent -- just want to tell you about some
real high load averages...
