Darren,
Theres been much talk of problems such as these...You can type 
`passwd -l darrenr` in order to change your password locally.
I've looked into the matter, and it seems passwd is now looking for either
yppasswd, or some other yp type setup (even if all ypd's are turned off in
/etc/rc.conf) or /etc/passwd.conf...passwd -l tells it to change 'local'
passwords...I hope this helps.
